An Art and Craft Initiative by Puducherry UT Government
An Article has been published by Mr Rajesh B Nair in The Hindu dated 13 Sep 2023 which brings out the initiate of government to create and support an Art and Craft Village with multipurpose aims. It is located at Murungapakkam village at Puducherry and is run by government. The village covers Crafts of terracotta, stone, coconut, leather , papier-mache and shells. These products are made and sold at village. Apart from this visitors can also get hand on experience in crafting. Considering the same government has several plans to expand and promote this initial setup at village to establish a mark in the field of Art and Craft.
It is not just the on spot sale of products that makes us Happy, but also exposure we get within and outside the country which is so much valuable.
The place has found itself in the itinerary of several tourists visiting puducherry. This has substantially helped in the sustenance of livelihood of local artisans. The demand of the products being made by these artisans is gradually gaining traction even outside the union territory as well. The most prominent of these are thematic art works to beautify public places for which several states and government agencies are regularly placing orders
